Your questions

What is a retirement development?
A retirement development is unlike any other, offering a range of value-added benefits which can really make a difference to your lifestyle; for example: greater security, the presence of a House Manager, the reassurance of an emergency call system, guaranteed property maintenance, pleasant and practical communal areas and facilities, social activities.

What is retirement living all about?
Retirement living is about living life to the full, with none of the concerns of living on your own.
It is about owning your own property, but not having to worry about heavy gardening, window cleaning or property maintenance
It is about living an independent and active life, with the security of additional support if you require it.
It is having the opportunity to make new friends and the offer of companionship.
It is about being able to shut your own front door, but know that help is available if you need it.
Retirement living is the freedom to enjoy the best years of your life!

Is a retirement development right for me?
Most retirement developments are designed for people who are actively retired and who can live independently. The usual minimum age to be able to move into a property is 60, or 55 if you are a partner.
A major benefit of living in a retirement development is that additional support and services are available, should you need them. The provision of communal facilities and the similar age and interests of people living in the development generally leads to a friendly community and a range of activities which are organised by the residents. However, there is no obligation to join in communal activities if you do not wish to do so.

What should I look for when choosing a retirement development?
Location

Location is a vital factor when making any move, but it becomes even more significant when considering moving to a retirement development. It may be helpful to ask yourself the following questions:
Is it near enough for my family and friends to come and visit me?
Are there shops nearby I can walk to if I no longer have use of a car?
How far is it from public transport?
Safety and accessibility
The additional security that a retirement development can offer is an important consideration. The House Manager will be able to provide information on the development's security and protection measures, from door entry systems to fire alarms. It is also important to find out whether an emergency call or monitoring system is installed at the development.
Ask for a trial demonstration as you are being shown round.

How does Cirrus Careline work?
Should anything happen to you, such as a fall, or if you are feeling unwell, then all you need to do is pull your nearest emergency cord or press the nearest button. When your call reaches the Control Centre, it will come up on the Operators' computer screen. Each call is identified by a digital code which automatically brings up all the details supplied by you, when you first moved in to your development. These include, for example, your name and address; the number of your dwelling; any medical problems you may have and the contact details for your GP, family or friends.
The Operator will speak to you and ask if they can help. They will then decide what assistance is required.

Why is the management company important?

Although many people associate their retirement accommodation with the original builder/developer, once the builder is off site your management company will be your single point of contact for all queries or problems you might encounter. To know that your home is in the safe hands of a good, professional management company, one which spends your money wisely, and only with your agreement, is a real benefit.
